Stop searching for your passion

The thought of "what am I gonna do with my life?" has been lingering around my mind for quite some time. I'm clueless about what I want to do next. I'm totally lost. Do I want to pursue my dream becoming a journalist? Should I do something that is unrelated to journalism? I don't know. To be honest, I'm not sure how the question came across my mind. It just came out of nowhere. Or maybe the thoughts came as I think that writing/journalism is no longer my interest. Maybe.

I stumbled upon a TedTalk video on Youtube called "Stop searching for your passion."I had no intention to watch it but as I scrolled the comment section, I decided to check it out. It was eye-opening. A 10 minutes 48 seconds video really change my perspective on the idea of passion.

So, what's passion? According to merriam-webster, passion is a strong liking or desire for or devotion to some activity, object or devotion to some activity, object or concept. Does it mean passion will fade? For example, if you're passionate in sports, would you forever love doing it or would it eventually fade away?

The presenter of the topic, Terri Trespicio, said that passion is not a plan. It's a feeling and feeling changes.  I believe most of us think that if you truly want to achieve something in your life, follow your passion. The truth is you don't follow your passion. Your passion follows you. I was a bit confused. How?

She explained that passion is not a job, sport or hobby.  It's the full force of your attention and energy that you give to whatever is right in front of you. If you're busy looking for the passion, you could miss the opportunities that change your life. You could also miss out on a great love. Because that's what happens when you have a tunnel vision, trying to find the one. Hence, don't follow your passion. You may like what you do today and dislike the next day. You might love your job today but the next day you get bored of it because your "passion" fades.

Right after watching the video, I contemplated my life goals. After all these years, I was wrong about the concept of passion. I thought writing is my passion but now it's clear that writing is just a hobby. Same goes to debating. Previously, I was so into debating. As time passed by, my interest in debate gone.

In conclusion, "don't wait for passion. Instead, spend your time and attention solving your favorite problems. Look for problems that need solving. Be useful and generous. People will thank you, hug you and pay you for it and that's where passion is, your energy and efforts meets someone else's needs."
